Wildlife safari at Cabela’s

Surely I’d been transported back in time two years.  The renowned Big 5 of South Africa fame stared me in the face.  I cautioned Berta to back away.

But come on, we were at Cabela’s.

An overwhelmingly HUGE store providing equipment for everything sport.

Although I did spend time in the hiking boot department with no satisfaction.

I had more fun checking out all the animals on display.

They were everywhere.

MWT – Going to town, an all day affair

Last Friday was time to go shopping and get off the cold Kaibab Plateau. I’ve been shivering ever since I arrived the 12th of May, even with my long johns on.

It’s not just a quick trip around the block to get groceries when living on Grand Canyon’s North Rim. But certainly worth the trade off.

We journeyed 80 miles to Kanab, Utah then hooked a right. I wanted to go to Page, Arizona because of more shopping choices and we took the long way around.

Through the Cockscombs red rock past the turn off for House Rock Valley Road (for a different trip), 75 miles east to Page.

Shopped to the point the truck and cooler where full and hoping not to have to do this again for several weeks.

Then dropped down from Page 30 miles onto the Marble Plateau.

Then about 10 miles to…

…Navajo Bridge where we made a quick stop to look for Condors but none were hanging around, darn.

Past the Vermilion Cliffs (sorry no pics was staring into the sun), up onto the Kaibab Plateau about 45 miles back to Jacob Lake where we stopped for a milk shake. Then through the forest and meadows back home another 45 miles. That’s one of my possible shopping trips with glorious sights along the way. And I was warm all day.

Going to Cedar Breaks

It’s our weekend and we Have to go grocery shopping. This means a very long drive, no matter where we go. So I try to incorporate a fun visit to somewhere beautiful.

Being it will be unforgivably hot in Kanab (98F/36C), Page (100F/38C) or St George (106F/41C) I’ve chosen to head to even higher elevation, 10,000 ft/3048 m (78F/25C) Cedar Breaks, then camp in the Dixie National Forest.

Then we’ll go to Cedar City, it’s off in the distance, (only 94F/34C) to shop. Off in the morning.

I’m not a shopper on the best of days, unless it’s second hand yet I spent the day shopping both new and used goods, some for my upcoming trip to South Africa... (read more here).

I went shopping in Prescott today and I certainly wasn’t looking for furniture.

It’s a beautiful 30 mile drive over the Bradshaw Mountains.

I had specific places to go and a list. Not Christmas shopping. Well, OK I did buy some cheeses to take to a Christmas dinner. Even got to sample a few while grazing/lunch at Costco.

I resisted all the hubbub and greenery at Wal-Mart for a back up heater, a bra (which I’m sure you don’t want to see) and a heavy duty electric cord.

Then Safeway for a few groceries because only they seem to carry my favorite ice cream, Haagen-Dazs crème brulee.

Yet while wheeling quickly past all the Christmas candy I remembered hearing about dark chocolate “kisses” and sure enough, so I bought several bags. I am greedy that way.

Oh yea, almost forgot about the new couch which I bought at, where else but, a thrift store.

Just the right size to fit in my RV collection of boxes, but you could only be 3 inches tall to sleep on it.

Makeover

Today Berta, Dolores and I went to Prescott, about 40 miles and one hour away. We started at Noahs, the animal rescue thrift store. Berta bought a merino wool dress for $12 with the original $115 price tag still on it. Unfortunately, so was the security tag. Dolores bought a colorful knit winter cap. I bought...

...the foam pad for $10, that's a sequin tube top by Frederick’s of Hollywood for $2 which I'm thinking of making a purse out of, and the book for $2. Score!

Next we went to the Mall. Started at Dillards where Dolores wanted to buy some makeup. She talked Berta and I into a makeover.

On the third try we found a store that had the right gadget to take the security tag off Berta’s new dress. Noahs had written a note that the dress was a donation, not stolen.

We also went to Costco, a bead store, a printer ink store and Safeway. And we actually made it home before dark.

Lately on TV talk shows there’s a big deal being made about “thrifty shopping” and saving $100s. One example, two ladies took in bags of clothes from their closets to a resale shop. One lady was offered $50 cash or $70 credit. She took the cash, and then went shopping, and excitedly spent $98.

Today, it’s the “Frugal Family” consisting of two parents and five children living on ~$35,000/year and paying off their second home. They live “under their means.” And have just published a book. Even the teenagers listed off brand name clothes they saved big on.

I’ll bet many of you practice thrifty shopping. I have forever. In fact Monday when I went to Prescott I scored a winter coat, Liz Claiborne, 100% wool outer and lining, leather collar, like new for $15. Later I discovered the original price tags in a pocket. Just made me love it more.

I guess I could have set a trend many years ago, if I was a trendy person. Almost all my clothes—and I have too many—and home decorations were bought second-hand at yard sales and thrift stores. Yet I don’t want too many people to know about this because they’ll beat me to all the good deals.
