Having a Yard Sale

The only problem with being a yard sale junkie and buying all kinds of stuff that really isn’t needed means also having to have a yard sale to recycle and make room for more.

Yet I didn’t have as much stuff to get rid of as I thought. But Berta did.

We finally opened on Friday at 10am after we went to a neighborhood yard sale. In fact we worked off their signs. But then we didn’t stay open home all afternoon as we heard about another yard sale.

Saturday we were pretty busy and both got rid of a lot of stuff. I’m sure there was something there with your name on it and you missed out on a great deal.

Lately on TV talk shows there’s a big deal being made about “thrifty shopping” and saving $100s. One example, two ladies took in bags of clothes from their closets to a resale shop. One lady was offered $50 cash or $70 credit. She took the cash, and then went shopping, and excitedly spent $98.

Today, it’s the “Frugal Family” consisting of two parents and five children living on ~$35,000/year and paying off their second home. They live “under their means.” And have just published a book. Even the teenagers listed off brand name clothes they saved big on.

I’ll bet many of you practice thrifty shopping. I have forever. In fact Monday when I went to Prescott I scored a winter coat, Liz Claiborne, 100% wool outer and lining, leather collar, like new for $15. Later I discovered the original price tags in a pocket. Just made me love it more.

I guess I could have set a trend many years ago, if I was a trendy person. Almost all my clothes—and I have too many—and home decorations were bought second-hand at yard sales and thrift stores. Yet I don’t want too many people to know about this because they’ll beat me to all the good deals.

Yard Sale artifact

I’m hooked on going to yard sales and thrift stores. I have to watch my quarters and am really out of space in my RV. Yet I go anyway as there’s something interesting about other people’s stuff and what they collect. Plus I can usually find a good buy.

Just some of the good stuff

At a local sale I discovered much really cool old stuff that I highly admire but have no space for, chairs, boxes, toboggans, the rusty shroud of a David Bradley tractor and a marvelous old solid wood wardrobe closet which my friend bought. Then nestled into a plastic tub I spot what looked like a very old clay pot, maybe Yavapai at 800+ years found near Hillside AZ. It’s actually broken in about half which reveals the fine temper in the thin walls. Finger prints still exist on the inside. It was like I could feel the love put into its making. Had to have it. And now it resides next to a metate, or grinding stone, another Native American artifact from the Flagstaff area that I bought at a yard sale a few years ago.
