When the little birds scatter it’s time to hawk watch. At least sometimes.
This immature (I think) Cooper’s hawk hid well in the ever green oaks.
Oh for more camera zoom, and less foliage.
Then it headed for the ground…
…and slowly walked across the yard…
…flew up onto the bird feeders’ stand…
…and surveyed the scene.
For a while.
Then flew off.
About an hour later it flew in again, but didn’t hang around long.
Unfortunately I can’t count this hawk for the GBBC (Great Backyard Bird Count), unless it shows up again today. Did you counting birds this weekend. Check it out.
(Update: The hawk flew through in a flash this morning so I added it to my count today. Plus there was a rabbit but don't suppose that counts)

Gaelyn these photos are fantastic. You have a better zoom that I have - I struggle to get any of our birds on film except through our window, and they seem to be a million miles away :( Diane
These are really good pics of him checking out your yard. Love seeing the little feet as he flew away.
Hee hee..I love the feet flying away photo too!
Ooohh Great feet photo!!!
You truly got some super shots of the Cooper. What a treat!!
Oh, look at his bad self! Great shots, and I love the "taking off" picture.

The Good Luck Duck
You were lucky that he came down from the tree, - superb shots!
Oh, these are such terrific captures, Gaelyn! And such a gorgeous bird! Love his eyes and the shot of his legs as he's flying away! Magnificent! Hope you have a wonderful week!

What a cool morning you had there! I wish I had your zoom lens.
Great shots of the Coopers, once he got out of the foliage. Very very good.
I like my boots too. A little almost bling for the old lady---LOL. MB
Wonderful series!! Boom & Gary of the Vermilon River, Canada.
Very cool shots of your Hawk. And a great bird to add to your list. Not so great for the little feeder birds. Wonderful shots.
Great serie of the Hawk... I love it!
Greetings from Holland,
Anna :-))
glad to see this! beautiful hawk!
terrific group of photos.
You got some great ground and bird feeder shots of that hawk, Gaelyn! I'd be excited to see one. I bet the other birds were keeping a low profile though. (Any chance you could get rid of the anti spam - Im having great difficulty with it.)
Good work, Gaelyn! You had to have been wishing very hard to make him land on your feeder for you.
Nice of the Cooper's hawk to show up for the count! Flying rabbits? :))
How nice of him to come visit, I'm sure the songbirds appreciated his attention.
I had one pose for me recently (image tomorrow) but he only showed me his back. Yours was much more cooperative, you got some great shots, you didn't need more zoom.
wonderful to see this beautiful bird and to get to take it's portrait. I have never done bird counting, don't know what type they are, not well enough. But i do enjoy them all the same.
What a gorgeous bird!
I enjoyed seeing your photos of the hawk! I wonder if he was trying to capture the rabbit you spotted the next day?
Gaelyn, you still got some nice shots! I'm glad you did the GBBC! Yes it is a juvenile or immature. You can tell by the dark vertical streaks on the breast instead of the golden barring on an adult. The adult would also have a gray back and head plumage, while this youngster is still mostly brown.
I have not done bird counting, lucky if I even see a few. I am never lucky to see these beautiful birds so tame to pose for the camera!
Again, sublime photos, I need to get back to the southwest!
A treat! Still this hawk is as watchful as you are.
Wonderful shots. I especially just love the feet leaving the photo!
You feed the little birds and indirectly feed the hawk *wink*
I love the photos of him on the ground , very cool! Looks like he let you get pretty close!
How awesome to see this!
