Columbia River & Bridge to Hood River, Oregon
The cash award I received from the temporary job I wrote about last week along the Columbia River Gorge allowed me to buy my first RV, a slide-in cabover camper for my old Ford.

Oregon Coast
Nov 1st, 1996, I hit the road, taking a month to travel down the west coast on Hwy 1, from the Washington peninsula to Los Angles. The wet windy weather found several major leaks in the camper eventually fixed with silicon. I stopped at every park and historic marker along the way.

Salton Sea, California
After a visit with my brother’s family in Los Angeles I went to the Salton Sea. (See last week’s SkyWatch Friday for more about the Sea.) Here I met a man at a fleamarket and we caravanned together for a couple of months.

Imperial Sand Dunes, California
He showed me many remote & beautiful places as we followed the "Gem Trails of Arizona" gathering rocks and camped for free on BLM and other public land all over the desert.

After we parted ways I spent a week camping in Joshua Tree National Park. It was a quiet time for me to be alone and regroup. But it started getting hot.

Time to head north for the summer. Yet I needed a quick forest fix so went to the San Bernardino National Forest before the long haul back to Washington.

Love your gypsy life! i am dreaming right along with you!
So many mangical photos in your post. That dune really sings to me, there is something about a windswept dune undisturbed by humans. Great trip down the coast. In 1976 we drove cross Canada from Montreal o Vancouver and down the west coast to San Francisco. That was some trip as we were restricted for time and had an old bomb held together with chewing gum. Whenever we sprung another leak, the kids had a lot of chewing to do!
There is just so much to see and experience in North America.
My students go down to the dunes on weekends. I haven't been there myself yet. I need to take a trek down to the Salton Sea and beyond! Thanks for sharing!

Very interesting. I've seen the US, from a car and/or truck, there's nothing like it. Your photos are wonderful.
It sounds so great, I wish I had done something like that. Such a freedom instead of working like a slave like I did.

Beautiful scenery along the Oregon Coast, and the desert looks very pretty. Those are some huge boulders you're camping beside. Very nice virtual road trip and lots of great memories for you!
