I own no land, instead I have wheelestate. I’ve been a full time RVer since 1997. Working summers as a Park Ranger takes me to many beautiful places and playing during the winter takes me to many more. This blog is simply the story of my life's adventures.

SWF – Fire in the mountains

01 Prescribed burn in Bradshaw Mts from SR89 N Prescott NF AZ (800x321)

Not the prettiest view of the Bradshaw Mountains south of Prescott and north of home.

02 Prescribed burn in Bradshaw Mts from SR89 N Prescott NF AZ (800x462)

The Forest Service had three prescribed burns going on at once.

03 Prescribed burn in Bradshaw Mts from SR89 N Prescott NF AZ (800x475)

Sure shows off well against this deep blue Arizona sky.

04 Prescribed burn in Bradshaw Mts from SR89 N Prescott NF AZ (800x573)

I totally understand that burns need to happen due to suppression for so long.

05 Prescribed burn in Bradshaw Mts from SR89 N Prescott NF AZ (800x600)

Yet it still freaks me out a bit to drive past.

06 Prescribed burn in Bradshaw Mts from SR89 N Prescott NF AZ (800x585)

Pardon the bug guts on the windshield, I can guarantee they will never do it again.

08 Smoke from Prescribed burn in Bradshaw Mts from SR89 S Prescott NF AZ (800x586)

Made for a very washed out sky on the way back home.

They're doing some burns here in CO, too - scary because of all the beetle-killed trees. I'm smiling at your comment on the bugs!

The burns are scary sometimes even if they're needed! Terrific captures, Gaelyn, bug guts and all! Thanks for a giggle to start the day! Hope you and Mike have a wonderful weekend!

Ha, I hope those bugs learned their lesson, not to interfere with your photos!
The smoke does make the air hazy, but maybe it will also give you beautiful red sunsets. We got some fantastic sunsets the last time we had smoky air.

Good grief, very scary looking, but also gorgeous against the blue sky! Sure makes an interesting Skywatch post. :)

It is scary riding through/past burns. I feel suffocated and worry about the wildlife that is burning to death! I had to laugh at your comment on the bugs. Thanks for your regular visits to my blog, Gaelyn, and your recent most positive comment about our beautiful country, South Africa. I'm trying to catch up on blog visits and comments, so here I am! Have a great weekend. (((Hugs))) Jo

Gaelyn: Neat captures of the smoke in the sky. I see what you mean about the bugs.

Those burns always make me nervous too, but not as nervous as a real wildfire. I was visiting the Great Sand Dunes in Colorado one time, and there was a wildfire on the only road into the park - we drove right past it (in fact there's a photo of it on my blog a couple of years ago). Anyway, nice photos, those classic blue skies are gorgeous.

oh, so the burns are different from wildfires. still, when there's fire, it's scary.:p

I understand how you feel about prescribed burns. Scary, but necessary. I wonder if I'll ever get used to it.

And what was the last thing that went through that bug's brain before he hit your windshield? :)

WHOA! That smoke sure fills the sky!

With us , with the fire season approaching fast, just a whiff of smoke makes us nervous. This year particularly since we have had some good rains and the undergrowth has flourished.

Smoke makes for interesting pictures though.

We normally do our burning just before the start of the summer season and not at the end of it, that way there is still grass during the winter for the animals.

I understand that burns like that needs to be done every now and then, but if they aren't carefully managed they can so easily get out of hand.

The burns do look scary, but it does make for a pretty photo of the blue skies.

Burns in the forests are always scary to me.

You ever notice with the bugs how big their eyes get just before they hit the windshield?

Ruth said...

If the nice weather holds, the burns should go well. It is not a job I would covet.

Too bad about the fire...if you hadn't told me, except for one or two photos I'd have thought it was atmospheric conditions.

at least they're prescribed burns. I saw pictures of the SHultz fire in Flagstaff earlier this year...horrible :( I had to skip out on the hike i really wanted to do in the Sawtooths because of fire, bummer. Tends to make a neat sunset sky, but otherwise not so much!

Yes, those burns go on here too. I don't like them much altho' i realize they are important. I think it is natural for us to have a reaction to it. LOL about the bugs!

Even controlled burns are spooky looking and you never know if they will get out of hand. In the Valley the farmers sometimes burn the potatoe fields and that looks awful. Fire can be a good thing. MB
