SWF – Walhalla stormy skies

01 Fallen tree along Point Imperial trail Walhalla Plateau NR GRCA NP AZ (1024x741)

Monday, plus Tuesday and Wednesday for that matter, we’ve experienced rain with thunder and lightning. But that didn’t keep us in the house on our day off.

02 Canyon, Marble Plateau & beyond from Point Imperail Walhalla Plateau NR GRCA NP AZ (1024x726)

On Monday we took a ride out onto the Walhalla Plateau in the rain and it was so amazing. I love being at a place long enough to really see all the many moods. Pure sunlight is not always the best.

03 Storm over 2000 Outlet burn & fall aspen Point Imperial trail Walhalla Plateau NR GRCA NP AZ (1024x768)

We started to take a walk along the Point Imperial trail which leads through a decade old burn with walls of fall glow aspen and a few pines taller than I am.

04 Stormy skies south from Point Imperial Walhalla Plateau NR GRCA NP AZ (1024x638)

Yet the dark and menacing clouds sent us back to the safety of the truck just in time to stay dry. The clouds built up and raced towards us from the southwest. But we continued to explore other viewpoints into the canyon.

05 Stormy skies clearing over Wotons Throne & canyon from Cape Royal Walhalla Plateau NR GRCA NP AZ (1024x414)

And finally made it to Cape Royal where we sat out more rain waiting for a light spot that pushed the clouds towards us. Certainly worth it even though we didn’t stay too long at the end of the trail. A new storm approached.

What incredible skies! And superb captures as always! Clear blue skies are always nice, but how could you not love the drama and glorious colors in these? Thanks as always for sharing the beauty! Hope you both have a terrific weekend!

Stormy days like that make some of the best photos and memories. Your images of storms over the canyon never cease to give me a thrill. What an experience!

Really, really beautiful. Thanks for taking us on this walk.

Absolutely stunning. You're right, moody skies can be more satisfying than pure blue.

there are so many places I haven't tad the chance to wee in different conditions, but there are few that are not perfect no matter what.

Sometimes the clouds and fog hide the mountain at Rainier, then it is time to check out the close views. And there are so many. Everywhere.

I love the drama of days like these! All the beautiful contrast! And fun to experience from both on the trail and in the car.

Amazing pics. Why all the dead trees? Natural burn or man made? Men do stupid stuff sometimes. Then they got to undo it and sometimes the rich lose their castles in the mountains.

Great shots. I love them. Its so ironic about the southwest that it is so arid but that it can cloud up and rain buckets in no time.

Sometimes the moody shots are the best of all! I like these a lot!

Very beautiful, as always. I agree that sun isn't always the best way to see something, although I'd prefer not to be outside in our western thunderstorms!

If we wait for the skies to clear and wait for the perfect day - we will waste a lot of time to enjoy the great outdoors.

Great post.

That first picture looks so dramatic, as if one is going to see that tree fall down. :)

I agree, blue sky and sunshine are not the only interesting scenes, especially over the vast canyon. I like seeing clouds gather and cast varying lights upon the layers.
Lovely photos. I'm glad you were able to get out and enjoy in spite of the weather.
