Description

I own no land, instead I have wheelestate. I’ve been a full time RVer since 1997. Working summers as a Park Ranger takes me to many beautiful places and playing during the winter takes me to many more. This blog is simply the story of my life's adventures.

Got birds

I finally got some birdseed. OK, I actually got it from Berta. And I’m always surprised to see this little guy at the seed feeder. Doesn’t usually show up until spring. Wonder if he knows something I don’t. Sure looks gray out there and it’s predicted to snow by tonight. Eat up!

Auntie’s Beads

Last year in November I received an email from Auntie’s Beads inviting me to spend a $25 gift certificate. I kind of forgot about it. Then Christmas came around and I made several pairs of earvines for gifts, plus some to put in Mike’s Mom’s store, and a pair for FabGrandma’s auction for the Oral Cancer Foundation. Then I went to make myself a pair only to discover I didn’t have enough of the 2mm sterling silver beads I like to use as spacers on the earvines.

So last week I spent the gift certificate at Auntie’s Beads. Prices are competitive, service was prompt, and I got a free gift of two 18mm faceted beads.

Now I have no excuse, I need to get busy making that pair of earvines.

And while I’m at it, shamelessly promote myself. Earvines sell for $25 including shipping in the US. I use sterling silver wire and have a wide variety of glass and gemstone beads.

SWF – Saguaro Sky

01 Saguaros BLM desert off Vulture Mine Rd Wickenburg AZ (1024x671)

There’s hardly anything better than the deep blue of an Arizona sky.

Unless it’s a few clouds to break up the monotony.

A Cardinal’s view

DSCF8796 (1024x768)

During the snow storm last weekend all I had out to feed the birds was a seed bell which had been hanging for almost a month and getting very little attention. But I guess if one is hungry enough they will get food from any angle possible.

MWT – A walk in the desert

01 BLM desert off Vulture Mine Rd Wickenburg AZ (1024x768)

Only about 30 miles away from home grows a different desert.

Just past the grocery store in Wickenburg up Vulture Mine Road there’s BLM desert to explore.

Winter snow birds

01 Snowing Yarnell AZ (1024x768)

Saturday noon

Saturday it started snowing. It continues to snow, on and off today. The poor birds are not happy. Especially with me, for running out of bird seed.

02 Snowing Yarnell AZ (768x1024)

Saturday 1:20pm

Yet I don’t feel guilty enough to go out and buy seed, not when it’s snowing. Besides, the local hardware store where I buy seed is closed on Sunday. It’s 30 miles beyond that for, just about anything. I’m not complaining about that mind you, but I can hear the birds bitchin’.

03 Snowing Yarnell AZ (1024x768)

Saturday 12:55pm

There’s a seed bell—which the birds have ignored for a month—covered with birds. So it’s not as though they’re starving. Besides, many neighbors feed the birds. Heck, Berta would give me seed if I felt like schlepping over through the wind to get it. Tomorrow is another day.

04 Birds & snow Yarnell AZ (1024x758) Sunday 9am

I am lulled by the usual customers—sparrows, juncos, jays, cardinals, doves, finches, quail and towhees—moving in and out like waves on a shore, in the open then hiding in brush, the ebb and flow without seeming (to me) pattern.

05 Cooper's or Sharp-shinned Hawk Yarnell AZ (614x1024)

Either Cooper’s or Sharp-shinned Hawk

So when I finally noticed this new arrival, I was more surprised than the rest of the flock.

Update on changes: This is day 12 of No Smoking. Still liking the new droidx phone. And my status has returned to single.
