Description

I own no land, instead I have wheelestate. I’ve been a full time RVer since 1997. Working summers as a Park Ranger takes me to many beautiful places and playing during the winter takes me to many more. This blog is simply the story of my life's adventures.

MWT – Five Alive

01 Four Turkey Vultures in tree top & one flying away Hwy 67 N Kaibab NF AZ (782x1024)

Life is too short and flies by way too fast.

02 Dark sky over morning sunlit temples from Lodge NR GRCA NP AZ pano (1024x556)

Only five weekends left at the canyon, not including this holiday one when I prefer not to travel or go anywhere during the American’s last hurrah of summer.

03 Mike & wildflowers along Widforss trail NR GRCA NP AZ (1024x768)

Mike mentioned getting a permit to camp on Widforss Point Monday night which requires a beautiful five mile hike each way and I just couldn’t get motivated for that. Besides, next weekend we want to go to Bryce Canyon National Park and occasionally I just need time off. Like at home spending too much time online.

04 RV in snow Yarnell AZ (1024x757)

The “winter” planning time rapidly approaches. For the last five years I’ve lived in central Arizona, not working, collecting unemployment, playing and travelling when I can afford it. It’s a great life. And the best part, I met Mike there!

05 Balancing rock Weaver Mts Yarnell AZ (1024x1009)

This year I actually applied for five winter jobs thinking I’d need to keep working to afford to buy a newer RV. But I don’t really want to work this winter. I’d rather go home with my honey to friends and family fun times. Life should be in balance.

06 Sunset Yarnell AZ (1024x768)

So now it must be time to move beyond five, as this is my 600th post and next month I’ll begin my third year of blogging, and return to those glorious Yarnell sunsets. Life is Good!

Three Rondavels Mpumalanga South Africa

01-Map-South_Africa-Mpumalanga_Escarpment.png

I feel like Joan gave me the royal tour of the Blyde River Canyon area. And this was the icing before we headed for Kruger National Park.

02 Three Rondavels overlook Mpumalanga ZA pano (1024x682)

The Blyde River Canyon is 10 miles (16 km) long starting at Bourke's Luck Potholes and ending at the Three Rondavels.

03 Three Rondavals Mpumalanga ZA (1024x747)

The Three Rondavels viewpoint, also called The Three Sisters, is around 4527 feet (1380 m) above sea level.

04 Rethatching a rondavel roof Letaba Rest Camp Kruger NP Mpumalanga ZA (731x1024)

These rock tops appear to have a hut-like rounded roof like the traditional African style house called rondavels.

05 Three Rondavels overlook Mpumalanga ZA (1024x768)

The landscape of the northern Drakensburg is overwhelming beautiful, lush and rich in life. I hope to return and spend more time hiking. Yet more adventures awaited as Joan and I headed to Kruger National Park, a future post.

Hiking the Transept trail

01 Transept trail NR GRCA NP AZ (768x1024)

Sometimes on our weekend Mike and I hike the Transept trail along the west rim which we connect with less than .25 mile from the RV.

02 Widforss Plateau from Transept trail NR GRCA NP AZ pano (1024x358)

The view is into Transept canyon and looking west at Widforss Plateau.

03 Transept trail NR GRCA NP AZ (1024x768)

We find sweet little side trails…

04 Mike on rock outcrop & Widforss Plateau from Transept trail NR GRCA NP AZ (1024x750)

…to almost secret overlooks.

05 Pinedrops along Transept trail NR GRCA NP AZ (752x1024)

Pinedrops

Plus colorful treasures in the forest.

06 Mike sitting on edge along Transept trail NR GRCA NP AZ (1024x768)

Mike has really overcome his fear of edges. Maybe a little too much.

07 Gaelyn on rock outcrop off Transept trail NR GRCA NP AZ by Mike (759x1024)

Possibly he learned that from me.

08 Sponge fossil along Transept trail NR GRCA NP AZ (791x1024)

Our discoveries are many including this huge sponge fossil.

09 Limestone stratigraphy from rock outcrop off Transept trail NR GRCA NP AZ (768x1024)

And I love the sculptures of eroded limestone stacked like ancient building blocks.

10 Mike on rock outcrop overlooking Widforss Point & temples from off Transept trail NR GRCA NP AZ (754x1024)

Geologist Clarence Dutton named the Transept Canyon in 1882 because of the way it crosses the north-south Bright Angel Canyon at an east-west angle like the arms of a cruciform church. He remarked that it was “one of the finest and perhaps most picturesque gorges in the whole Kaibab front.”

One more time,
