I own no land, instead I have wheelestate. I’ve been a full time RVer since 1997. Working summers as a Park Ranger takes me to many beautiful places and playing during the winter takes me to many more. This blog is simply the story of my life's adventures.

MWT – Fire on the Mountain

After one fire started by a careless camper near Flagstaff Arizona was 31% contained at 280 acres on Saturday another fire Sunday morning, Schultz Fire, also presumably started by an abandoned campfire has now burned almost 10000 acres and caused the evacuation of at least 1000 homes. Highway 89 east and north of Flagstaff is closed and traffic is being routed through Grand Canyon National Park’s South Rim.

DSCF7470 - Copy (1024x677)

The smoke is visible from the North Rim.

When camping in National Forests anywhere, but especially in the Southwest where there’s been a drought for over a decade, PLEASE be Extremely careful with fire. If you have to build a campfire it doesn’t have to burn six feet tall and needs to be put DEAD out!

Please pray for all the firefighters and people involved.

That is so disturbing and I find myself asking over and over again, what in the hell are people thinking? Or is that the problem, they don't think and they don't care! Take care, Gaelyn!

People that haven't been in the woods just don't have a clue the devastation that can be caused by just one false move... Hope that no body gets hurt in the fighting of this disaster... Things are just that, people cannot be replaced!

Please everyone, listen to those who know! DON"T WALK AWAY FROM YOUR CAMP FIRE!!!!!

I've been hearing about this on the news. It's just horrible that someone's carelessness has caused this catastrophe. It happens here in the CA foothills, too, unfortunately. Keep safe, Gaelyn, and I'll pray for the safety of the firefighters.

not to mention the inconvience of an almost 200 mile detour for travelers to get to Flagstaff. Oh, and why on why do people insist on putting LOGS in the fire pit, that are way too big, and they hang over on both ends, so that it is much more dangerous and could cause a fire right there in the developed area of the North Rim? I simply do not understand why you can't afford $6 for a bundle of firewood that would 1) actually burn and 2) would fit in the fire pit.

AND, NO it does not take a fire 4 feet above the fire pit to roast a freaking marshmallow.

and OH YEAH, while I am at it, do you REALLY think we want to smell your plastic and garbage burning??? Don't burn that crap in the fire pit, the next person may not want to have plastic fumes on their freaking hot dogs!!!!!

too beautiful to be so careless

Some people are idiots.

And as Forrest Gump would say, "That's all I have to say about that."

Oh NO! Terrible to think of fire destroying such a gorgeous area of natural beauty!

I've been wondering what effect the fire might have on the canyon. It doesn't look like the smoke is obscuing the view at the moment.
Fires in the west are always a worry. Son Eric worked on an organized crew while in college, I tried not to worry. I told myself that he wasn't on a hot shot crew and there was nothing to worry about. Wrong, he had at least one close call.

Og my gosh. Look at that smoke. It is so sad when so called nature lovers leave their camp fires to cause su much distruction and death of many animals in its wake.

It is very sad and disturbing that someone started the fires from being so careless. I hope the firefighter and everyone stays safe.

We even have it on the news here in France. Why do people not think ahead. I cannot imagine what goes on in there heads. My sister-in-law lives in Ozz and they have horrendous fires as well. Mind you I have seen some pretty horrific ones in the Cape in S.Africa. Diane

I'm sick about this, Gaelyn. Mary was going to come to the Flagstaff and the Canyon later this week - may change her plans. I don't understand how people who want to play in the wilderness can be so careless.

How many times does this need to be mentioned, Gaelyn? What, are some people just idiots? Like many here I do NOT understand it at all. Of course, prayers for the firefighters and everyone working to contain the blazes and put them out.

Between fires and flooding it has not been a good spring on this continent. Be safe Gaelyn
