SWF – Dark clouds over Havasu Canyon

01 Havasu Falls Havasupai Indian Reservation AZ (768x1024)

Havasu Falls

After three glorious days enjoying the waterfalls of Havasu Canyon Jake and I made a hasty hike out with reported bad weather on its way.

We left the campground about 6:30am and made the two miles back to the Village for breakfast by 7am.

Then we absolutely hustled the remaining eight miles up as the clouds built overhead and it lightly rained on and off.

By the time I topped out six hours later, and about 45 minutes behind Jake, the wind whipped the sleet so hard I thought I might be blown back into the canyon. Then it snowed on the way back to Flagstaff. All in all, a great hike.

Looks like a great hike in an awesome place under quite dramatic skies.

That sky looks like the Painted Desert! I love the aqua blue water in the pool of the waterfall...After a 10 mile hike it better be a fabulous reward, and it appears to have been just that! Wow!

The waterfall is beautiful with that turquoise water. The hike back would have terrified me...not to mention I couldn't hike that far...huf, puf ;)
Thanks for sharing a hike I will never take, Gaelyn.

I've seen Havasu Falls in photos, but never in person - that's one place I'd love to vacation some time. I heard there's a cave up under the falls if you swim a ways under water & Tom Cruise swam inside - What an experience that would be!!!
Great capture - I love the color of that water!

Gaelyn: Neat photos of the scary skies, so glad you got out in time.

That first photograph really is impressive. I find it amazing that water flowing over such red / muddy looking ground can end up in such a beautiful lake / pond / pool. I would have put on my mask and snorkel and braved the cold.

What a wonderful location.

That first photo is breathtaking with the lovely aquamarine color in the travertine.
You timed your trip right, getting out just before bad weather hit.

Stunning photos Gaelyn and a beautiful spot to spend some time. The winds are weird these days, we are finding them stronger and longer lasting around here. Glad you made it out safely and I am impressed with the pace!
