After I left Navajo Lake I headed to Cedar Breaks National Monument. Unfortunately I couldn’t stay long as I still needed to get to Cedar City to shop and get an oil change.
So I continued west on scenic State Route 14.
Which lies north of Zion National Park.
The road continues downhill through forest that shows the standing dead of a bark beetle kill off. Yet there are also trees decades old to carry on.
Continuing west I drop off the Colorado Plateau through Cedar Canyon which follows Coal Creek.
Cedar City lies in a valley below at almost 6000 feet (1829 km). Of course it took me longer than planned to get all my stops made in this unknown town.
Because that’s four hours from the North Rim and I prefer not to drive in the dark I decided to camp in the Dixie National Forest at Cedar Canyon campground then return to Cedar Breaks National Monument the next day. (I will post Cedar Breaks soon, I promise.)

I love Utah--there is a different landscape around every turn. It is so amazing how you can be in desert, then in less than an hour in mountain forest.
Do you mind if I live vicariously through you and your blogs? I need to get a plan of my own.
I love the west. There is nothing like it. I agree about the mountains so close to the desert, such an experience.
Utah, Colorado, Wyoming, New Mexico, Arizonia--did I leave one out? Who could choose. Whoops Montana..
What a gorgeous drive - I love the changing rock formations!
The drive on 14 is beautiful, and Cedar City is my favorite Utah town. Hope you finally had time to look around at Cedar Breaks.
You needed an oil change? Didn't know you ran on oil? I have just simple, ordinary blood that I run on. LOL!! Just can't resist teasing you can I? LOL!!
Every time I look at your posts you make me more and more envious. I am just about to sell everything and head over there to live with you so I can see these places too. :) You are staying in a most wonderful part of the country Gaelyn and am so glad you share all this beauty with us. Thanks.
Sound like you're having fun Gaelyn! Thanks for sharing your trip with us (hubby just told me that we alwso visited Zion Nat. Park) - have a safe rest of your trip.
What a beautiful trip that must have been.
Sigh.
Thanks for taking us along all your journeys :)!
Thanks for visiting! We are having much trouble in My Muskoka with MORE drownings! One this a.m., two yesterday.
It seems like the have figured out the way to go and have a good life. I admire people who do this. I also like your photography. You need a super wide lens to capture so much beauty in each scene.
Thank you very much for visiting my Pick a Peck of Pixels blog and for the comment you left me there.

Only six more hours and you could have been in my neighborhood! I admire your independent spirit.
love that area! your camper looks so comfy in the forest!
I love your photos. How fun...happy traveling!
Gaelyn: That is simply beautiful country.
So neat to see photos of this area again. I long to go back there! Love that vista you caught here. And the camp site!
What a beautiful place! So much to discover, so much to enjoy! I can understand why you would not want to leave it... I think I could stay and visit for a VERY long time!
i'd like to trek and camp there someday :)
That looks like a very scenic drive. It's fascinating how those pines grow out of the canyon walls.
Ah, gaelyn, I have been across this road once. What magnificent views!
I think this is the road where we have brake problems. My husband, from North Dakota, is very much not used to driving in mountains. He did better this year, but I could still smell the hotness of them.
