Description

I own no land, instead I have wheelestate. I’ve been a full time RVer since 1997. Working summers as a Park Ranger takes me to many beautiful places and playing during the winter takes me to many more. This blog is simply the story of my life's adventures.

Grotto Beach Hermanus South Africa

01 Grotto Beach Hermanus Western Cape ZA (1024x740)

After exploring the whale museum and shopping for my birthday until I knew I’d better stop I drove out of town a short ways and found a sign pointing toward Grotto Beach.

02 Grotto Beach Hermanus Western Cape ZA (1024x768)

It was so peaceful to walk along the beach, very few others around.

03 Seagull Grotto Beach Hermanus Western Cape ZA (768x1024)

Listening to the waves, smelling the sea, feeling a breeze, looking at life and gathering shells.04 Grotto Beach Hermanus Western Cape ZA (1024x611)

I’ve always considered birthdays to be special, a day to do whatever you choose. Definitely not work. I once had to quit a job  to get my birthday off, after a two week notice of course. Nice that I work summers now so I don’t have to do that again.05 Grotto Beach Hermanus Western Cape ZA (1024x768)

I returned to Anchors Rest via a grocery store where I bought dinner and sweet treats. Then walked to the coast trail and watched the sun set over Walker Bay.

My journey was way too quickly coming to an end and the next day I’d be heading to the Cape of Good Hope.

Sales and Whales in Hermanus South Africa

01 Sunrise from Anchors' Rest B&B Hermanus Western Cape ZA (745x1024)

March 26, 2010, I woke up on my birthday ready for a South African adventure.

02 De Beers Hermanus Western Cape ZA (1024x885)

First stop, after breakfast, go shopping. To see what all I treated myself to go here.

03 Whaling Museum Hermanus Western Cape ZA (1024x768)

Then off to the Whale Museum.

04 Whale Crier slide at Whale Museum Hermanus Western Cape ZA (1024x722)

Hermanus is a whale town.

05 Walker Bay from Whaling Museum Hermanus Western Cape ZA 1 of 2 (1024x768)

The Southern Right Whales come to South Africa between May and December to mate and calf and are the most frequently seen in Walker Bay.

06 Southern Right Whales painting by Noel Ashton slide at Whale Museum Hermanus Western Cape ZA (1024x667)

Being I was there at the wrong time of the year I settled with watching a very interesting slide show with artwork by Noel Ashton.

07 Right Whale skeleton Whale Museum Hermanus Western Cape ZA (1024x768)

And explored the museum.

08 Whale weather vane Whale Museum Hermanus Western Cape ZA (768x1024)

Sure wish I’d been there to see the real whales.

09 Vendor in stall Hermanus Western Cape ZA (768x1024)

But, oh well, instead I walked around town checking out what the vendors had for sale before heading to the beach.

Anchors Rest B&B Hermanus South Africa

01 R320 S Western Cape ZA (1024x637)

The drive through the Overberg region (thanks Jonker), what I thought was the Little Karoo, was pretty but I was ready to return to the coast. The road I choose was only paved partway winding through vineyards.

02 Main house at Anchors' Rest B&B Hermanus Western Cape ZA (1024x768)

I’d gone online to find a B&B in Hermanus that offered the internet provider I’d paid for. Then I just had to find Anchors Rest, located in a residential area a block off the coast.

03 Gate to room at Anchors Rest B&B Hermanus Western Cape ZA (768x1024)

I stayed in a separate building…

…with my own private garden.

Come on in.

This was a nicely furnished and spacious place.

Plus, right outside in the garden was a picnic table where I sat while online chatting with my honey and enjoyed…

…this beautifully blooming bush. I looked forward to exploring Hermanus the next day. My host suggested the whaling museums.

MWT – Settling in

01 (1024x768)

It’s taken almost a month to move into the new 5th-wheel.

02 (1024x768)

Picking and choosing what decorative chachkies would fit. When we get ready to roll it takes me about two hours to pack it all.

03 (1024x558)

Packing plastic tubs for storage in either the tin shed or the basement of the RV.

04 (1024x768)

The little house is almost empty.

05 (955x1024)

Still have a few things to wrap up and put away, somewhere. And if I ever start feeling better I’ll get it done.

Little Karoo South Africa

01 N2 W Western Cape ZA (1024x627)

After a quick stop in Mossel Bay I returned to N2…

02 N2 W Little Karoo Western Cape ZA (1024x616)

…and continued west on an inland route with a plan to return to the coast.

03 Storm clouds over N2 W Little Karoo Western Cape ZA (1024x628)

There really isn’t a coastal route that I could see on the map.

04 N2 W Western Cape ZA (1024x768)

But I passed several side roads that looked inviting.

05 R320 S Western Cape ZA (1024x768)

I’d decided to take R320 to Hermanus on the coast…

06 R320 S gravel Western Cape ZA (1024x768)

…and stay for a couple days in celebration of my birthday, which you can read about here.
