Description

I own no land, instead I have wheelestate. I’ve been a full time RVer since 1997. Working summers as a Park Ranger takes me to many beautiful places and playing during the winter takes me to many more. This blog is simply the story of my life's adventures.

MWT – Settling in

01 (1024x768)

It’s taken almost a month to move into the new 5th-wheel.

02 (1024x768)

Picking and choosing what decorative chachkies would fit. When we get ready to roll it takes me about two hours to pack it all.

03 (1024x558)

Packing plastic tubs for storage in either the tin shed or the basement of the RV.

04 (1024x768)

The little house is almost empty.

05 (955x1024)

Still have a few things to wrap up and put away, somewhere. And if I ever start feeling better I’ll get it done.

Little Karoo South Africa

01 N2 W Western Cape ZA (1024x627)

After a quick stop in Mossel Bay I returned to N2…

02 N2 W Little Karoo Western Cape ZA (1024x616)

…and continued west on an inland route with a plan to return to the coast.

03 Storm clouds over N2 W Little Karoo Western Cape ZA (1024x628)

There really isn’t a coastal route that I could see on the map.

04 N2 W Western Cape ZA (1024x768)

But I passed several side roads that looked inviting.

05 R320 S Western Cape ZA (1024x768)

I’d decided to take R320 to Hermanus on the coast…

06 R320 S gravel Western Cape ZA (1024x768)

…and stay for a couple days in celebration of my birthday, which you can read about here.

Mossel Bay South Africa

01 Mossel Bay & Outeniqua Mts R328 Garden Route Western Cape ZA pano (1024x405)

After a wonderful evening in Hartenbos I drove back to Mossel Bay. The southern shores of the bay are lined with awesome cliffs that loom above the thundering surf and the relentless force of the elements has cut out massive caverns.

02 St Blaize Cave below lighthouse Mossel Bay Garden Route Western Cape ZA (1024x768)

The roof of Cape St. Blaize Cave, also known as Bat’s Cave, is over 32.8 feet (10 m) high, it is 39.3 feet (12 m) deep and 72 feet (22 m) wide at its mouth. During an archaeological dig in the 1880's artifacts of the Khoi-San dating back 80,000 years were discovered. Middens consisting mainly of shells indicate that early dwellers lived largely on a diet of shellfish.

03 Lighthouse Mossel Bay Garden Route Western Cape ZA (1024x768)

The history of Mossel Bay is closely linked to maritime activities. The Cape St Blaize lighthouse was erected in 1864 and is the only rock lighthouse on the South African coast.

04 Fisherman Indian Ocean Mossel Bay Garden Route Western Cape ZA (1024x768)

Seems as though people still enjoy what Mossel Bay and the Indian Ocean offer for food.

Hartenbos South Africa

I got to the coast and looked for a place to stay for the night, desperately wanting to find internet so I could post about my eventful day caving and ostrich riding.

01 Outside of room at Riviera Hartenbos Garden Route Western Cape ZA (756x1024)

I drove past Hartenbos to Mossel Bay and back thinking I’d spend a little extra tonight and get a room with a view.

02 Bed & living room at Riviera Hartenbos Garden Route Western Cape ZA (768x1024)

But I settled with the Riveria in Hartenbos, with no internet.

03 Livingroom & hall past bedroom to bathroom & back door at Riviera Hartenbos Garden Route Western Cape ZA (1024x768)

And a very comfortable set up with front and back door.

04 Dining room & bar at Riviera Hartenbos Garden Route Western Cape ZA (768x1024)

I was the only guest in the dinning room (top floor).

05 Chicken, potato, cabbage & vegie dinner Riviera Hartenbos Garden Route Western Cape ZA (1024x768)

Their loss as the meal was delicious.

06 Sunset over river mouth into Indian Ocean Riviera Hartenbos Garden Route Western Cape ZA (1024x768)

And the view superb.

07 Sunset over river with bridge Riviera Hartenbos Garden Route Western Cape ZA (1024x768)

Of the setting sun.

08 Sunset, moon & lit cross reflected in river Riviera Hartenbos Garden Route Western Cape ZA (750x1024)

Plus sweet dreams of exploring more of the coast.

A winter visit(or) to the South Rim Grand Canyon National Park

01 Snow on SF peaks (1024x447)

San Francisco Peaks

Friday Mike and I drove up to the South Rim Grand Canyon.

02 Amanda SR GRCA NP AZ (1024x787)

Amanda, a special friend of mine and fellow Park Ranger from Oregon Caves days has made her way up the NPS ladder and works at Klondike Gold Rush National Historic Park in Alaska. She was in training at the Albright Training Center located within GRCA NP. Wow, only a four hour drive away.

03 Afternoon view of NR & BAC from SR GRCA NP AZ pano (830x1024)

Mike and I took a short walk along the rim then met up with Amanda for dinner and made a plan for Saturday.

04 The Village from Rim trail SR GRCA NP AZ (1024x768)

We walked about 4 miles (6.4 k) along the rim trail stopping to gaze at the canyon and chatting away as if it hadn’t been 3 years since we’d seen each other.

05 Afternoon shadows from temples SR GRCA NP AZ (1024x558)

The sky was clear so we didn’t expect a very colorful sunset but the light and shadow show never disappoints.

06 Hopi House SR GRCA NP AZ (1024x768)

We ended up across from Hopi House (above) at El Tovar (below) for drinks and appetizers.

07 El Tovar SR GRCA NP AZ (1024x809)

Then back to El Tovar for breakfast along with another friend who works on the South Rim.

08 Morning shadows on Cheops Pyramid SR GRCA NP AZ (1024x754)

Windy and too cold for me so we went back to camp while Amanda walked the rim trail from Hermits Rest back to The Village.

09 Desert View Watchtower collage (1024x768)

Later in the afternoon we all reconnected and thanks to our friend loaning us her car we drove out to the Desert Watch Tower without having to move the truck/camper.

10 Cedar Mt, Navajo land & Vermilion Cliffs from Desert View Watchtower SR GRCA NP AZ (1024x768)

This far eastern view from the tower shows Cedar Mountain and across Navajo land to the shadowed Vermilion Cliffs.

11 Colorado R upstream Lippan Pt SR GRCA NP AZ pano (1024x387)

We drove back towards The Village stopping at Lippan Point which juts out far enough to offer an almost 180 degree view.

12 Sunset over canyon & Colorado R Lippan Pt SR GRCA NP AZ pano (1024x480)

Amazing views of the Colorado River up and down stream as the last light slipped under the low building storm clouds…

13 Last light on canyon walls & Co R Lippan Pt SR GRCA NP AZ (1024x768)

…turning the canyon walls to gold.

14 Last light on canyon walls Lippan Pt SR GRCA NP AZ pano (1024x363)

Cold wind increased as the last light faded. Time to head back to camp and say our goodbyes. In the morning we left the canyon under cloudy skies and a light bit of snow. At home it’s getting very cold and windy.  My prayers go out to all of you experiencing this horrible winter storm. Stay warm, stay safe.
